US Federal Security Guidance

Procedures should be developed for controlling special vehicles, such as emergency vehicles, VIP vehicles, and courier vehicles. Vehicles that are allowed regular access should be registered with the appropriate security officer. Parking areas should be located away from sensitive areas. [Vehicle Identification, Vehicle Control, DOT Physical Security Survey Checklist]

General Guidance

Vehicle checkpoints should be developed to check all inbound and outbound vehicles before they are permitted to proceed. For highly sensitive facilities, the barriers should be substantial. Vehicles delivering or picking up shipments should be registered in a log when they enter and leave the facility. The information collected should include the registration number of the tractor and trailer; the name of the company; the name of the driver; the date and time of arrival; the gate the truck entered; the date and time of departure; the gate the truck departed from; and a reference to the bill of lading. If the organization uses a gatehouse, it should be in the center of the road and have enough lanes to be able to handle visitors and employees during rush hour. Cars parked inside an aviation facility should be locked to prevent unauthorized personnel from hiding or hiding explosive devices in them. Vehicle barriers should be used to prevent unauthorized vehicles from gaining access to secured areas. The type of vehicle barrier to be used will depend on the amount of protection that is needed for the facility.
